SPEJ’s Business Areas

Sony Pictures Entertainment (Japan) Inc. (SPEJ) is a subsidiary of U.S.-based Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE). SPEJ has four business divisions: Film Distribution, Distribution, Networks and International Productions, and also operates two channels run by its group companies: Animax and Kids Station.

SPE's global operations encompass motion picture and television production, acquisition, and distribution, the operation of television networks and studio facilities, and development of new entertainment products, services, and technologies.

SPE owns a wide range of IP, including Sony Pictures' Universe of Marvel Characters (900+ Marvel characters), as well as a vast and diverse library of content that it distributes to a variety of platforms.

SPE's Motion Picture Group production organizations and film labels include Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, TriStar Pictures, 3000 Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation, Stage 6 Films, AFFIRM Films, Sony Pictures International Productions, and Sony Pictures Classics. Sony Pictures Television operates dozens of wholly owned and joint-venture production companies around the world. The studio works with top talent and creators and leverages its strengths as an independent studio to develop original IP.

SPE creates and delivers world-class film, television, and mobile game entertainment that engages billions of people, connecting creators and audiences around the globe. In addition, as a member of the Sony Group, SPE engages in active collaboration with other Sony Group businesses.

Film Distribution

SPEJ’s Film Distribution markets and distributes movies created by SPE’s Motion Picture Group. In addition, SPEJ also distributes acquired or sublicensed foreign and Japanese local films.

Distribution Business

SPEJ’s Distribution provides high-quality entertainment for the enjoyment of consumers with different lifestyles through 4K ULTRA HD™ Disc, Blu-ray Disc™, DVD, TV/digital delivery and mobile access, which all incorporate the newest technologies. SPEJ not only offers content created by the SPE Motion Picture Group and SPT but also Japanese and foreign films, television programs and animation. SPEJ also licenses content from SPE’s library to broadcasting stations and on-demand service providers in Japan, including 4K HDR content and game show formats.

Networks Business

Through its group companies Animax Broadcast Japan Inc. and Kids Station Inc., SPEJ Networks operates pay-TV businesses such as Animax, which focuses on broadcasting animation, and Kids Station which specializes in content for children and animation. It is also engaged in the creation and development of a range of content-focused businesses.

International Productions Business

The International Production unit of SPEJ produces Japanese feature-length movies as part of the worldwide local-language production initiative of Sony Pictures International Productions (SPIP).
